The Green Example

The Flanders region is a densely populated area whereas due to its favourable location within Europe there is a great deal of industry and agriculture. We now live in a highly urbanised environment, which goes hand in hand with a great deal of pollution.

A synthesis report by the Flanders Environment Agency (VMM; Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij) shows that, despite the considerable efforts that have been made to reduce air pollution over a period of 17 years, Flanders has still not reached the recommended values set by the World Health Organisation. The current situation still appears to be bad for our health and the environment. As far as ozone is concerned, no one lives in a region with sufficiently low concentrations, and only 1% of the population lives in a region where particulate matter measurements are low (VMM, 2019). This means that far-reaching measures are needed to safeguard health.

It is one of the reasons why more and more citizens are looking to move to quiet places beneficial to their health, to a municipality that is mindful of well-being and the climate. A green vision from higher up is also the driving force for attracting new businesses and investments.

Innovative and active thinking about sustainability as a city or municipality can make all the difference: a point of view that the city of Lanaken has wholeheartedly embraced. There is a clear sustainability vision on the table, with a focus on creating a support base for eco-friendly entrepreneurship in the city. Encon was asked how they could encourage their companies, SMEs, retailers and farmers to become sustainable.

We worked together to formulate a plan of action, to be approved by the municipal council. The plan outlined the possibilities out there and what the focus should be. The decision ultimately landed on a subsidy application for companies. A subsidy for entrepreneurs to use for an energy scan of their company, supported by the city.

The energy scan is designed to identify the most important energy consumers. All energy consumers and the related costs of the last year are analysed in detail. The areas covered, if applicable, include: HVAC with heating, cooling and ventilation, lighting, compressed air, steam, engines, no-load consumption and general energy consumption, general consumption in the offices, et cetera.

Everything is then compiled into a clear report that can be seen as an energy savings plan that identifies the potential savings in terms of energy and CO2 emissions. Each saving is presented with an investment cost including payback period.

An action plan can be used to decide which implementation projects can be achieved effectively. With an overview of this kind, it becomes clear to many companies that sustainable innovation can bring growth and prepare them for the future.

A clear signal, courtesy of the city of Lanaken. Both industry and energy production are still the main sources of carbon dioxide at present. As a city or municipality, however, you can make a difference by setting an example. Set a good example, raise awareness and encourage companies to innovate sustainably. The stronger image you achieve here, along with the environmental impact, will lead to satisfied citizens and attract more inhabitants and businesses looking for a green environment.
